Pencil Shooter

Boy who held pencil like gun suspended

Should the boy have been suspended? Why or why not? Do school systems take "weapons" too seriously or are they justified after the many recent school shootings? Explain. What rules at Windsor High School do you feel are too extreme, if any, and why?

he shouldn't have been suspended. He's a kid and he is going to make gun sounds. School systems should take it seriously but be smart about it. A pencil isn't going to shoot somebody. I don't think any rules are too extreme.

The boy should not have been suspended. Every second grader has done that at least once. i would be more worried if he was trying to stab someone than pretending to shoot with a pencil. He obviously knows it isn't a gun. I don't really pay much attention to the actual rules here so I have no idea if they are extreme. I just don't do anything stupid.

Boys will be boys. The school system took this too far. At Windsor, I hate the whole rule with medicine such as tylenol and other meds of that type. However, there must have been a reason for making this rule. One bad apple ruins it for the whole group.

You know, I thought the goat blog was stupid, but this just takes the cake. The school system is stupid. This boy should not have been suspended. No kid would have actually been scared of a pencil. The school system are taking weapons a bit too seriously. But I do understand, though just barely, the decision they made. However this is a pencil. And if one day, some kid points a pencil at another kid and makes gun noises and that causes the kid to somehow get shot, I will totally understand where the school system was coming from. It's not like here where I totally agree with the rules, aside from the fact that I have to wear shoes.

I think it was a little too far to suspend this little boy. He just wanted to be like his dad, which got him in trouble. I think school systems have a right to take weapons seriously but this kid just had a pencil, and he's only a second-grader. The only rule at WHS that I'm not very fond of is the 3-finger rule with your straps, and nothing with one-shoulder. What's so bad about a shoulder?

I don't think he should have been suspended especially since he is so young and probably doesn't know better. School systems should take weapons seriously but being smart about the suspensions. I don't think any rules here are too extreme.

I personally believe that the boy should not have been suspended. It was a pencil. Geez. It was something that everyone touches everyday and could hardly harm anyone by simply making noises. Yes, a pencil can be used as a weapon like Nick did when he stabbed Connor in 7th grade. I think there should be a line drawn between "play" and "threat". Kids will always be kids. No one can help that.

I think schools take the whole weapons thing way too far. Who was he hurting by making gun noises with a pencil? Here the admins take it to seriously also, when I used to have a crewneck with a gun on it they used to make me take it off. What was I going to do shot someone with it?

No, the boy shouldn't have been suspended its ridiculous because all he was doing was playing around. I think that schools should be aware of things that happen around the world today, but for a 2nd grade student? I think that's just stupid because everyone knows how little boys are. I don't really find that any rules are stupid at Windsor but the only one I think is stupid is not using cell phones. These iPads that they gave us are just like a big cell phone and we can use them "all day" but we can't use our phones which do the same exact thing.

The little boy shouldn't have been suspended. Little boys are in to guns and fighting, that's just how boys are. School systems are taking weapons too seriously, like how threatening can a 7 year old be? The dress code here is to extreme, the medicine policy is just stupid, and the cell phone use.

Ashlyn Archer said...

No the boy should have not been suspended. He was just a little kid playing, I believe he should've been told not to do that anymore not be suspended. School systems should be serious due to weapons but sometimes they are to serious. They should be protecting us, but not to the fact where we can get suspended like Christopher did. The only rule at WHS that I find extreme is the dress code due to that if one girl wears something she is fine, but if another girl with the same outfit on, gets sents home.

The boy shouldn't have been suspended for this. Teachers always tell students to use their imagination, and this seven year old was. Any kid is going to make gun sounds and pretend they have a gun because it's how they play. I did it when I was a kid and kids will continue to do it for the rest of eternity. Schools are beginning to take weapons too seriously and there is a reason for it, but the schools need to be smart about it. A seven year old boy is not going to shoot his friend with a pencil. The only rule I find slightly extreme at WHS is the dress code. When it's as hot as it is, we should be allowed to wear tank tops.

He is a boy. They took this way to far, I could understand if he was older, wanting to be a bully, or was really going to stab the other boy. A lot of the rules at this school is stupid. The dress code is a problem to me. Everybody has different body types and lengths so they will come to different stopping points. Also, why cant we have cough drops. That is really stupid for us to have to go down to the nurse just for a cough drop every fifteen minutes just to get one. Also, no toughing,Do teacher will get mad even if a couple holds hands in the hallway or even hug as friends. I think that some high schools need to back off the students.

The boy should not have been suspended because he was just being a kid. They even said that the kid was just trying to be like his dad who is a marine. School systems need to take weapons seriously, but this is too far. The rules at Windsor High School are not too extreme.

First off, the child's records are confidential, so the news lady would know nothing of the previous referrals and punishments. There is probably way more to the story than that of which seeps through the media in order to get public attention. No one is merely suspended for pointing a pencil. Warnings usually take place before it reaches this point. Perhaps this just so happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back. Not only does this boy getting suspended send a message to him, but to the rest of the children in the school, and now region-wide. I see it as someone having to control this pretend behavior now so that it isn't seemingly "okay" when it's not just a pencil. I wouldn't be too thrilled if I had a child and they brought home the referral. I may not punish him anymore than the school had, but I certainly would try and teach him common sense, and that behavior isn't acceptable in school. I highly doubt this was the kid's first offense. It takes a lot to get a kid suspended, many warnings, silent lunches, etc. (unless a knife or something is brought to school). My mom and aunt, as well as many other people I know, work in Suffolk public schools (not this particular one, though) and it isn't the school system and rules that are messed up. There are tons of other things that are worse than the rules. The rules are a good standing and a guideline that are supposed to be followed by the children. The only rule that I think are "too" extreme at Windsor High School is the rule that states something about not being able to sell products at school (store bought or homemade (baked goodies and such or even other things)). Sure I understand a rule against selling drugs, but I don't make "special brownies." I don't believe that selling stuff should be against school policy. It is promoting entrepreneurship, but perhaps they are just threatened by the fact that it'd (the products) be more tasteful than that of which the school provides.

Schools blow the whole weapons thing completely out of proportion. He was just acting his age; he wasn't causing anybody any harm. They have the right to take weapons, but this was a freaking second-grader. I don't pay attention to the rules here at Windsor; I keep to the shadows so that attention isn't drawn to me.

Raegan Hasty said...

The boy should not have been suspended. I agree with the father of the boy that the school system is took it to far. I'm sure a second grade student doesn't have thoughts about threatening people. Like it says in the clip, the boy didn't mean to hurt anyone and that he was just pretending to be a marine like his dad. School systems do take actual weapons seriously, and they should. On the other hand, they don't need to pull for strings. For example, suspending a boy for playing with a pencil like a gun. Everyone at a young age has an imagination. Times have changed and any sign of a threat or weapon will result in more serious consequences than it used to be.

He shouldn't have been suspended. It was just a pencil every kid should have the right to pretend. The school takes weapons too seriously he just a kid. At this school there are too many rules here that I don't like. I just have to obey them untill I get out of here.

He shouldn't have been suspended for that. It was just a pencil. I think Windsor has a lot of rules that they are too extreme on.

I think this is crazy. The kid was playing. Some people are ridiculous. It wasn't a real gun and the kid was playing. If he was actually going to hurt someone then that would be different. This school took it way to far.

No he should not be suspended. Yea they took it too far. I don't know of any rules at windsor that are too extreme.

I don't think the boy should be suspended. He wasn't trying to hurt anyone. They should take weapons seriously, but they shouldn't of took this so seriously. I don't know what the rules are at the school.

The boy should not have been suspended. The kid has an imagination i used to do the same thing. School Systems take weapons to seriously. The school shootings were older people not a second grader. The cell phone use is just stupid i was at lunch and got mine took.

I hate our society. No the boy shouldn't have been suspended. Yes, there is bad in this world but from people who know what they are doing better. I feel the dress code it too extreme here. They are supposedly preparing us for the future but in the future we may dress as we please.

That dude shouldn't been suspended.Pencils are really illegal he should go to prison. When he grows up you don't know what can happen.

He shouldn't have been suspended far that. He was just playing with a pencil. All kids imagine things why does he need to be punished for that. I understand why he got into trouble, but I think they took it a little too far with the punishment.

This little boy should not have been suspended. One he is a boy who was looking up to his father and two he wasn't doing it as a threat he was playing. Schools take a lot of things way to far and will have to deal with the responses to their actions. Windsor has some really dumb rules. The rule that always made me mad was when I had lunch and they would say stuff about my mom bringing me lunch, when the school lunch taste like crap and doesn't even look good.

This boy should have not been suspended. Its not like he can shoot someone with a pencil, come on now hes in 2nd grade. Yes i do think the school systems take "weapons" too seriously, if the kid would have actually brought a real weapon to school, then i could understand the schools reasoning.

Kellie Matthews said...

School systems have crossed the line with these new rules. Yes, there needs to be rules about guns, but there is definitely a grey area. He is in 2nd grade, of course he wants to be just like his dad. Windsor High school does have some strong rules, but they aren't ridiculous.

Mason C said...

This is so stupid. The little boys dad is a freaking marine. Obviously the kid has been subjected to guns. This is what I find stupid; We try to hide guns from our kids, and only show them the horrors of guns, but the kids that are not subjected to guns are usually the ones that get to curious of them and then bad stuff starts happening. It's the same concept as if you tell a kid they can't have something, it makes them want it more. I wish these idiots would understand if they teach their children the dangers of guns, and let them be around them, the children will look at the guns as a normality rather than an oddity, and won't be obsessive over them.

I don't think he should have got suspended. He is a little kid. That's what little boys do now a days. They play with toy guns. School systems need to take it seriously because of the school situations. Just don't take it out on a little kid.

Jordan said...

He shouldnt have been suspended, he's a little boy, thats what boys do, pretend to shoot guns. I have a 20 year old boyfriend who does that still! Yeah, in that case they took it too seriously, he was pretending to shoot with a pencil, theres no harm in that. WHS is too extreme on dress codes, like the 3 inch shoulder length. I dont see the boys saying "dang girl, you got a nice shoulder."

Chantel :) said...

I don't think he should have been suspended. They do take it to a point of extreme. there are some that's silly like the soda machine rule.

Tessa Altman said...

No, I do not think that the boy should have been suspended. I think he was just being a boy. His father was a marine and he was using his imagination to try and be a marine just like his daddy. I think that schools take weapons too seriously, I understand being safe and protecting the children when these actions needed to be taken but not over a second graders pencil. I think some of the clothing rules are too serious. Low cut shirts and short skirts I understand but no tank tops, I just don't see where showing your shoulders is "to much skin".

Anonymous said...

I don't believe the kid should have been suspended, because he is young and it is just a pencil. This child did not mean any harm and this was his "free" or "play" time. Schools are being over protective because of school shootings and bombings, but I believe with this age group the tolerance level should be higher. I believe our school dress code can be a little extreme. I know it is extreme, because students don't know how to dress if they are not given one; it's just unfair to others. I also dislike the no phones out at lunch, or when you're not in a class, I think you should be able to use them; though it is different depending on teacher.

I don't think he should have been suspended. I mean he's only in the second grade and he was just messing around. I think school systems take weapons too seriously when it comes to elementary schools. I think some of the dress code is stupid. I think the food policy is kind of dumb too.

Austin Hyler said...

He shouldn't have been suspended. School systems are way to serious about weapons. Rules at this school really ain't that strict.

Zack said...

No I do not think that he should have been suspended. Because that is not that big of deal. He is just a kid. I think that they do take this to serious. This is an elementary school the only thing that they should be worried about gun related would be an outside person coming into the school.

I saw this the other day. Seriously what is this world coming to. Boys have been acting like they are playing with guns and using sound effects similar to them since the wild west. School systems are so screwed up these days, you hear more about petty situations that shouldn't even matter, over actual violence. His father is in the service so I'm sure he spends tons of time in the back yard imagining that he's fighting out there with his Dad. I find this punishment very uncalled for. It's not like he brought a gun to school and pointed it to somebody, while acknowledging that it is in fact a weapon. This is harmless play, he didn't stab anyone with the durn pencil. I do feel that little stupid rules such as medicine for menstrual cramps, severe headaches and sore throats should be allowed and kept in a purse. I do believe that certain rules should not applied to everyone because some of us are responsible enough to take it properly.
