I think this is a legitimate case, I don't think it has to do with the fact that it's a same sex relationship. I think the same consequences would apply to an opposite sex relationship, it's sex with a minor.

I think the case is dumb. I think they pressed charges because it was a same-sex relationship. They could have been upset either way. The defendants don't stand a chance. They broke the law. I don't agree with the law but it is a law nonetheless.

I don't like this case. It's absolutely absurd. The fact that this girl got in trouble for this is right. She shouldn't be in trouble though. For if this was a girl with a male, nobody would care. No one would be prosecuting her otherwise. She stands a chance. And I must say, I do somewhat agree with the law.

I definitely think there is some prejudice just because it is a same-sex situation. I don't think she stands a chance in court at all. Then again, it depends on the views of the judge and the jury. I can't necessarily say that I agree with the law because age is just a number. It doesn't define maturity and age shouldn't influence love. My parents are 9 years apart and started dating when my mom was 15. However, times were different back then. The law is the law and shouldn't discriminate because it is same-sex.

This case is odd. I believe Kate should have all charges drop. She was in a relationship with the 15 year old not just randomly raped her. Prosecutors seem to press chargers on because it is same-sex sexual relationship because it was two girls. I hope the defendant stands a chance and is able to fight all the charges off of her. I do agree with the law but not with this case because they were in fact in a relationship.

I think the case is more about her sexual relationship with a minor. I really don't think she does. Its the law and she broke it now she suffers the consequences from it. I do agree with the law and if she is found guilty then its her fault for doing it in the first place.

I think that the prosecutors pressed charges because it was the same sex. Kate, to me, has a chance in court and might even win. You can not rape the willing. I think if they both said they did it than the parents should not of when to the police. Kate will have this on her record till the day she dies.

I think that this case should just be thrown out. I really think the parents of the minor only pressed charges because it was a same-sex relationship and they weren't willing to accept that. I don't agree with the age limit for statutory rape, if you're old enough to say yes to sex with an older person than you know what you're doing. Nobody can't make you do something that you don't want to do. The minor clearly didn't have a problem with it. How much pressure can the 18 year old girl have on a 14 year old girl? The parents have just made a decision when they're angry. The defendant does can stand in court. But she's going to be found guilty regardless because of the law. If I was her I'd take the plea bargain because the court is gonna give her jail time. I clearly don't agree with law.

I think that this case is legit on the fact that they are pressing charges because of the age. The defendant already admitted to sexual relations with the minor so I don't think she stands a chance. I do agree with the law because a 14 year old has no business having sex with an 18 year old.

I know it's the law, but she shouldn't have been charged with two counts of the felony. The fact that this was a same-sex relationship is why the girl was charged in the first place. I don't think the 14 year old's parents would have turned a guy in if one was in place of Kate. I don't think the defendant has much of a chance in court. She doesn't really have much to defend because she clearly broke the law. I do agree with the law but in cases such as this one, the court should be more lenient since they were only four years apart.

Alex C. said...

The case is standard. The same would happen to any gender doing the same thing. She doesn't stand a chance in court. It is pretty straightforward in the law. The didn't say anything about the other girl so it's kind of hard to know specifics. I don't really agree with the law here if the other girl was okay with it. I don't think the court is the one that needs to step in.

Leslee Umphlett said...

There is definitely some prejudice because it is a same-sex couple. The prosecutors would probably still press charges if it was a boy-girl relationship, but it wouldn't cause as much controversy. I don't think she has a chance in court, because she will be discriminated against in a court setting as well. She may stand a chance if she gets a judge that approves of same sex relationships, but otherwise she won't. I think age shouldn't matter in the eyes of the law unless it is with someone younger than 13. Anyone younger than thirteen doesn't know what's happening, but at age thirteen and older they are well aware of what sex is and whether or not they're going to do it. Laws shouldn't discriminate based on same-sex relationships.

I think this case is most definitely one that stands out. The law does state that as an adult, you can't have sexual relations with a minor. She is 18 and the other girl was 14. That is a four year difference. I think that the 14 year old probably doesn't even know her sexual orientation and was most likely pressured into saying yes to having relations with the older girl. Girls are a whole lot bigger and harsher on peer pressure than us guys are. I do not think the defendant will stand even a slim chance in court. I agree with the law in some cases, like this one. In other cases, I do not.

I don't think it's fair to only show the perpetrator's side of the story (the emotional toll it has). To be unbiased on the case, both sides need to be looked at. I truly do believe that prosecutors are pressing charges regardless of "same-sex" relations. That is a very current controversy (over the last some odd years) and I think it is cheap to try and use that card as a defense. Since it is her first offense, being label as a sex offender (that's on the records for life) is a bit too harsh, I'm sure she has learned her lesson through all of the media and future punishments such as house arrest. She should take the deal of house arrest for two years over the 15 in prison. I agree with the law 100%, unless the parents from both sides of the relationship give their consent. The emotional toll on the adult may be heavy, but the fourteen year old could be scarred by the mistake she may think is all her fault. I would think that the 14 year old is having a tougher time with this than the 18 year old.

This case is ridiculous. I actually signed the petition just last night, and found out that the parents blame the 14-year-old's parents blame their daughter's homosexuality on Kaitlyn. So, yes I believe that the charges were pressed mainly because it was a same-sex relationship. I want to say that she has a chance, but the law tends to discriminate against homosexuals, transsexuals, etc. The law shouldn't discriminate against those people. Otherwise, the phrase "equal under the law" is complete BS.

I do agree with the law.I think the 18 yr girl knew what kind of trouble she could get her self into while messing with her. She should have left her alone as soon as she turned 18.The prosecutor should just drop the charges as long as she agrees to leave the little girl alone. I know I wouldn't want to spend 15 years in prison over a little kid.

This case is most about sexual relationship between an adult and minor. The state of Florida has a cut and dry law against statutory rape. The relationship was between to females, and that only added more controversy to the case. It all depends on the judge and jury whether she will get off easy or not. Chances are she will face time behind bars.

Courtney Morrill said...

Even though what the 18 year old did was against the law, the charges should be dropped. The parents of the minor probably pressed charges because it was a same-sex relationship. It really depends on what the jury and the judge thinks about this case. I do agree with the law to some extent. The 18 year did not rape or harm anybody, she was just in a relationship.

Myiah Cook said...

I think that their ideas on punishment is a little harsh. I do think the prosecutors pressed charges mainly because it was a same-sex sexual relationship. Unfortunely, she broke the law, so I doubt she stands a chance in court. I do agree with this law, no 18 year old should have any sexual relations with a 15 year old, unless they have parent permission, then that's another story.

Kelsey Taylor said...

I think they have a case. It doesn't matter if it's the same sex. It's still sex with a minor. I think if she has a chance it will be because they feel bad for her.

They pressed charges for the same sex relationship i think. They broke a law.I don't agree with the law tho.

Its dumb. I think it's a little bit of both. She has a very small chance in court.

I agree and disagree with the case. I read about it the other day trying to get both sides of the story and not just one. If you think about the age it is only four years and Kate was only 17 when they started dating and supposedly the parents waited until she was 18 to press charges. Then you have to think about their grade level the other girl was in upperclassman classes and was n the cheer squad and they did sports together. If you think about Windsor High School you are in ninth grade at age fourteen and a senior is 18 so here you are asking for trouble. Florida has a law if they are no more than 4 years apart and they admit to a consensual relationship the charges can be dropped. I think that they are taking her life away she was a good student and was chosen for most school spirit and they are going to ruin her life for forever.

This punishment to me is dumb. I mean the parents of the 15 year old are mad because their daughter was in a relationship with the same-sex. To me, the charges should be dropped. She has a chance in court, she might just win it.

I Think the case stands out some. I think they pressed charges because the of law . I don't know if she stands a chance or not because the law is the law. I don't agree with the law.

I think they pressed charges because it was a same-sex relationship. I don't think they stand a chance in court. She had sex with a minor and that is breaking the law. I don't agree that she should be punished for that long. I do and don't agree with the law.

I think that if they were dating before that it shouldn't apply. If started dating after she had turned 18 then I would agree. I do think that a 14 year should be dating someone that much older than her. She is young and I don't think she really knows what she is doing. This only happened because of the 14 years old girls father. It shows that parents haven't accepted their child. Law is the law so there isn't much you can do.

Kellie Matthews said...

I think that the parents of the 14 year old just can't face the fact that their daughter was having sexual relations with another girl. I know that it's against the law, and that should be the reason they are pressing charges. The only way the defendant stands a chance in court is if they take the petition into account.

Mason C said...

I think this law all together should be redetermined. It's illegal if an 18 year old has sexual relations with their 17 year old partner. I feel as if that is pretty ridiculous. I also feel that anyone 16 and over is old enough to make decisions for themselves. I can understand the legitimacy of a 40 year old having sexual relations with a 16 year old, but there are married couples all over the world the are 5-10 years apart. I don't understand the difference.

Jordan said...

The 15 year olds parent probably didnt even know she liked girls, and they didnt like it so they took it out on the 18 year old. The girl proabably does have a chance.

Cass C said...

I think the case is legit, but stupid. Stuff like this happens all the time. I dont think the defendant stads a chance, because the other girl is 14.

Hunter Alexander said...

I'm still confused about this case. I don't know if she has a chance or not. I don't agree with the law.

abby haring said...

The decision was made between the two girls therefore just because one of them is older doesn't mean that only she should be punished. I do think they only pressed charges because they were the same sex and couldn't accept that about there daughter. I hope she stands a chance this poor girl. I don't agree with the law in this particular case because it takes two.

Tessa Altman said...

I think that this is a crazy case. I think they pressed charges because of age not same-sex relations. I think that no matter if you like the same sex or if you like the opposite sex there is no reason or exception for an 18 year old having sexual relations with a 14 year old. I do not think the defendant has a chance in court. I think she doesn't have a chance because of such the dramatic age difference. The 18 year old is four years older then the 14 year old. That is just sick and wrong. I agree that an 18 year old should not be able to have sexual relations with anyone under that age. If it was a 17 year old and an 18 year old it would be a completely different story she might would have a chance but the fact that there age is so far apart is ridiculous.

I think that the same-sex relationship had something to do with this whole case. It's understandable that some parents don't agree with how their son or daughter may feel towards a certain sex. I think the relationship was the drive of the prosecution and the fact hat they had sex just topped it off. I think that it was just unfortunate that the girl was 18 and the parents were able to use that against her to get what they felt was right. I actually feel bad for the 18 year old because she had so much going for her and once decision has put that all under water. 15 years in prison would be such a nightmare to hear if you think about it. It sucks that the 14, not 15, year old's plea doesn't matter since she's a minor, but I really hope that everything works out for the 18 year old. I can't imagine being charged as a sex offender either. This just seems like a huge misunderstanding and I think it's sad. The two girls knew exactly what they were doing and the parents have somehow blown this all out of proportion.

Nicholas Miles said...

Its pretty dumb. Its kinda their decision to have a relationship.

Zack Lynch said...

I think that she should be tried because the law is the same for everyone. I think that it is probably based on the same sex relationship. I don't think she stands a chance in court. Because she is 18 and that is considered rape. I do agree with the law.

I believe the case is legit as well, I don't think this has anything to do with pointing the fingers at being an homosexual. It would be a hole different ball game if it was an 18 year old boy and and 14 year old girl, or perhaps an 18 year old boy and 14 year old boy. The girl can stand up there on the news gushing tears and trying to get sympathy from others, but the fact is that she was in the wrong. No matter which gender type. It isn't okay, and she might have thought it was acceptable because of their same gender. But the age is what matters in this case overall. An 18 year old young lady should be seeking sexually with a 14 year old. I see that the girl seems to be pretty nice and very upset about the outcome of all this, but she should have known that the 14 year old's parents were not aware nor were going to accept the fact of the sexually activity. I know it takes two too tango but in this case she should have tango'd with a girl of age.
