What do you think of James Holmes' insanity plea? If the judge accepts his plea, what do you think the results of his mental health evaluation will show? Should the mental health evaluation results affect the consequences of his crime? Why or why not?

I think he might be insane. No normal person tries to be the Joker (even if it wasn't close) and then kills people. I think it will show what everyone already knows about him. I think he still knew what he was doing. The consequences should not be changed.

it's stupid. He should have opened with that. It will show that he is sane. It should effect his consequences. He lied.

I think its pretty ridiculous, he should be put to death. That he is messed up in the head. No, because that was his decision to do it, it was him doing it not something else controlling him.

Kaylee Smith said...

Anyone who can kill or hurt innocent people is crazy. That may not mean they are legally insane but they are definitely messed up. I'm not sure what the results of his mental health evaluation will be. If the results show he is not insane, he will face a lot of time in prison. If he is insane he will probably have to spend the majority of his life in a crazy house. So it's a lose-lose situation.

I think he has a legitimate cause to plea insanity. I can't see a sane person going into a movie theater and shooting so many people for no reason. Mental health should affect punishment, but only in certain situations. In this case I do think if he has some mental thing going on it did affect the crime and should effect his punishment.

This is stupid in my opinion. I think that he has to have something wrong with him but he should still have to have some type of punishment. The test should ave nothing to do with his punishment. Anybody can say that they have mental issues.

It's clear that this man is insane. Any person who could kill that many people and do what he did obviously has some sort of mental issues. However, cases like these are tricky. Many in his position will try to plea insanity so their sentence will be less brutal. His health evaluation shouldn't have anything to do with the outcome of his trial.

I think there may be something to his insanity plea. And if the judge accepts it, then the results will probably show he is insane. And perhaps his mental health evaluation results should affect the consequences. If he doesn't know what he's doing, why punish him so severely?

Emma Grace Donovan said...

If he was so insane he wouldn't know what to plea because of anything. I think it's bs. He's just trying to cop out of trouble. Too bad, so sad.

I think that the insanity plea is stupid. He is insane! He made the decision to kill innocent people and he should have to pay the consequences.

Leslee Umphlett said...

He has to be crazy in some way for him to want to kill all those people. He thought he was the Joker, so he he must have something wrong with him; only little kids can truly believe they're the Joker and that's on Halloween. The results of his mental health evaluation will probably show some sort of mental defect. If he is insane, it shouldn't affect the consequences of his crime. If he is insane, he will probably always be insane and he could do something like this again.

Gerald Perkins said...

I think his insanity plea is bogus. Of course he's insane! He shot up a movie theater! You have to be insane to do that. If the judge accepts his plea, it will show he's insane but he still needs to pay for what he did. I think he should go to a prison, not a mental health facility. He needs to go to Death Row and think about dying while he waits his turn. He needs to suffer his consequences while awaiting his execution. His execution is not the punishment. The punishment is the suspense that builds up of the unknown. He knows that he is going to die and his days are very limited but he will not know what death feels like until then. It will just make him go more insane. Which is good because he needs to pay.

I think it's crazy. He should have plead not guilty from the start. Even though he is guilty. I don't think the judge should except his plea,he knew what he was doing when he went into the movie's.

I think his plea for insanity is bull. The judge shouldn't accept his plea. He's obviously crazy for doing that but him claiming to have mental issues is very common. He's just trying to get a less sentence or some type of excuse.

Darion said...

I think he's screwed either way. If the plea is accepted, he goes to a mental health facility for a long time. If the plea is isn't accepted, he goes to jail with the possibility of death. Mental health should affect punishments, but only in certain cases. If you're mentally sick, then you should have some leniency. If not, well, then may no one have mercy on your miserable and pathetic soul.

This man has to be insane to kill innocent people. The test should not affect his punishment because he knew what he was doing. James Holmes killed so many people for no reason; he needs to be punished. Even if he is insane, he is still a criminal.

Raegan Hasty said...

Whether Holmes was insane or not he still killed and wounded people in the theater. It is hard for me to take that someone who is quote "insane" can get away with committing the same crime as Joe Blow on the street. A crime is a crime. The government needs to look more at mental health programs for the mentally disturbed. Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

There is a difference between INSANITY and EVIL. This man child thing is not insane...just evil.

Kelsey Taylor said...

I don't think he should be let go. I think he just doesn't want to go to jail for the rest of his life. I think even if he is crazy they still shouldn't let him go because that won't change the fact that he did it.

Tyler R said...

I have never even heard of this. He might be crazy I don't know. Insane in the brain.

I do think he is insane I mean look at what he did no sane person does that. I don't think he should have to go under all the test its quite obvious he is crazy. No he should have to serve for his crime just like everyone else or be put to death just like he did to those innocent people.

Breanna said...

I don't think that he is insane but he is just trying to get out of it. I hope that the judge really doesn't accept it because all of the people that he killed and hurt in the theater. I think that he should have to sit in jail and be punished just like the ones that he hurt and killed. He should have to deal with what they dealt with, losing a limb or being shot and dealing with the pain.

Kellie Matthews said...

I think that it's reasonable to have an insanity plea. No one who does that much damage can be completely right in the head. Yet, there are always consequences to every action, and he should know that. I don't think that the insanity plea should affect how he is tried though.

This man is insane, evil, disgusting, psycho, sick and everything bad. He killed and injured so many people and because hes insane it makes it ok? No. The judge should deny all of this mental health stuff to determine hes insane. It will prbably affect the consequences of his crime. Insane or not I think he should die for taking all those peoples lives.

Hunter Alexander said...

I think he's crazy. The results will be that he is crazy. He should be punished for what he did because he killed people.

Hunter Dixon said...

This man is insane. He just does not want to go to jail for the rest of his life. He should still be put in jail even if he is crazy.

Cass C said...

I think he's insane. Mental health evaluation results should not affect the consequences of his crime, because regardless if he's insane he still killed and harmed many innocent people.

Nicholas Miles said...

Its really dumb. It will show he is most likely perfectly fine. Yes. I think he done this on purpose.

I definitely agree that this man is insane and mentally unstable. I believe his mental evaluation will be very odd, I wonder if it will be something they've ever seen before. I don't believe it should affect his sentence, I can't imagine him being let off, I believe he needs to pay for what he has done.

I don't understand why anyone would go into a movie theater and do things like this. I guess it was best for him to take the insanity plea because in the long run I guess it could save trial time. I think the judge will accept the plea so he can be evaluated. I'm curious as to what his evaluation would show. I think he'll probably be committed either way, but I don't see that to be any reason why his consequences should be in any way rendered because he's possibly 'crazy".

Coollife_HyC said...

He has the right to plea insanity if he wants to I guess. I guess they will show whether or not he is insane. I don't think so! He should still go to jail or at least a mental institution. No matter what, he still killed all of those people so of course he should be punished.

Anonymous said...

He is obviously insane. No one kills a ton of innocent people for no reason. He deserves to spend life locked away. He doesn't need to be in jail but instead He needs to be in a severe mental health and behavioral hospital. To be honest, every time a patient qualifies for release they are evaluated 3 times to various testing and examining through multiply doctors. Majority of the evaluations result in a very low number of doctors agree "yes, he should be conditionally released".
In Holmes case, I don't think the results from the evaluation should result in him being free. James will be away for a long time. And Doctors aren't going to come to the agreement of letting him go due to the fact that he is very unstable, there is no way that he is capable for even qualifying for conditional release.

I think that he is insane. I think that they will probably find he is crazy. No I don't think mental health should effect the crime they should be punished normally.

I think that he is crazy. Why would you shoot up a movie theater. His mental health shouldn't matter he should go to prison for life.
