Inspiring or Inappropriate?

Read the article at the following link:

"Coach forces bus into bizarre cemetery stop after loss"

What did you think of the coach's decision? Do you agree with his method of encouraging his players to bring their season back to life? Would the coach's "speech" have inspired you or freaked you out? Should the coach be punished? Why or why not, and if so, how? If you are an athlete, has a coach ever used a certain method or given a specific speech that you will always remember? If so, tell us about it.

I think that the coach took it a little too far. I understand that they need to bring there season back to life but having them lay on graves or even taking them to a cemetery is a bit to far in my book. I think it would have inspired me but also freaked me out a little bit because I would have basically been told that I wasn’t working hard enough and that someone who was dead would work harder then me just to be alive. The one thing I will always remember is this quote "Life's a climb, but it's worth the view". I love this quote it is saying that life is tough but when it comes down to it it's better than being dead.

I think that the coach’s decision was a good one. The only thing I wouldn’t agree with is if he made them lay on the graves. This shows them that even after a tough loss there season isn’t over and that it can be “brought back to life”. If my coach did this I would be very inspired.

I think what he did was wrong. I don’t agree because you shouldn’t make your players play on graves. It would freak me out. He should be punished for what he did. He shouldn’t be making kids play on peoples graves that disrespectful. None of my couches never gave me a speech that I remember. I don’t think he should couch again. It’s disrespectful to be running on other people’s graves you don’t know. Its sad that he made them run on other peoples graves.

I think the coach made a poor decision. The coach's speech would not had inspired, especially while laying on a grave. Taking someone to a cemetery just to teach them a lesson is carrying it way to far. He should be punished because, he could had taken them back to the school or talked to them about it on the bus. The whole "lay on the grave" thing would had freaked me out big time! That just seems disrespectful to lay on someone's grave. No sports coach has really given me a speech that is really memorable. All of the speeches that I have heard were just legit.

I think that it was kind of stupid that he decided to pull over at a cemetery just to make a point. No I really don't think that it was the wisest choice. It was a little disrespectful to the deceased what he made them do. I probably would have understood and would be a little more motivated, but it would have been very weird.

I understand that coaches have their own ways of inspiring their players, but this coach went too far. Whether his goal of inspiring the players to bring their season “back to life” was achieved or not, making the bus stop at a cemetery after a losing game was quite inappropriate. If I had been one of the players, I know I would’ve been freaking out. As far as the coach’s punishment, I don’t believe much legal action should be taken just for making the players lay on the graves during his speech, even though it was weird and freaky. Revoking his coaching privileges, however, would be well fit for this situation considering he also coaches the basketball team at that school.

The coaches decision was fine. Its not like they dug up the dead people and all that. The speech was for the players to play harder the next time to win. The coach should not be punished he did nothing wrong. Maybe a little disrespectful but not illegal. This couch was trying to encourage the players to play better and win there next game. Everyone gets all hyped up that he done this. I bet back in the day nobody would of cared less and maybe even approve of this kinda of encouragement to the kids. Nowadays every parent is sensitive and is like that is not suppose to help my kid. In reality the speech the couch gave the kids a lot to think about and look forward to their next game.

I think that it was kind of a weird technique to motivate his team. But in a way I feel like it could work. It was a very good metaphor to use graves to mean they need to bring their season back to life. In my experience with sports I don’t think a coach has ever done anything quite like that. But I wish someone would have it would have been pretty cool to experience. I do not think the coach should be punished he didn’t do anything wrong.

I think it's weird that he took them into a graveyard after a football game. I think it would have offended some of the players and their families if some other coach would have done it to. I would have been freaked out if my coach told me to lay down a grave and listen to him talk about the dead. I don't think he should be punished because he thought his method would help out.

Why did the coach have the football players lay on someone's grave. I believe that was kind of disrespectful because you are laying on a deceased relative, or friend. I believe that he went a little too far with his demonstration of "coming back to life." I would have found that the coach's speech would have been kind of strange, and to have us lay on a stranger's grave. The coach could be punished because some people might not like what he had done.

Keith Bryant: The speech that the coach was saying was very inspirational. It was a good speech, but in the wrong place. That is very disrespectful to the families of the people who lie at rest their. It is in fact part wrong to make kids lie on graves yes; a coach is an important person in a teen’s life. They should be helpful, not giving harsh times that they will remember forever, for these kids that already have enough going on in their lives.

I don't think that the coach's decision was smart. He should have demonstrated his point to the team, in a different way, as opposed to making them lay on strangers' graves, because that's very disrespectful. If my coach had asked me to lay on someone's grave I would be very freaked out. The coach probably shouldn’t be punished, because, it’s a big deal, but it’s not that big of a deal. What they did wasn’t illegal, just a little awkward. If anything, he should probably be suspended for a short period of time.

The Coach's decision is very poor. Why would you want to take your players to a cemetery and make them lay on the grave that’s crazy and kind of weird? So I do mot agree with this method at all for encouragement to bring there season back to life, but the speech kind of freaked me out cause what makes you think this will help out your football players? The coach should be fired for this situation because first of all he didn't as the school board of his district and see it would be accepted. Yes, Coach Fleming always told his ladies to never give up always give it your best even if you down to your last just keep giving it your all

Although bringing “their season back to life” was a good pep talk, he could have gone about getting his point across very differently. Having football players, much less anyone, lie on top of people’s graves is wrong and disrespectful. Some sort of punishment, like short-term suspension, should probably be given to him. His speech would have inspired me yes, but I don’t think it would have sunk into me while I was lying on top of the deceased. One of my old coaches had strange methods, but I don’t remember them too well.

A cemetery. Really? I understand what he was trying to get across but he should not have stopped at a cemetery and made the players lay on the graves. It definitely would have freaked me out. Honestly, I probably would have cried. That is pretty gross laying on a grave. Yes, I think the coach should be punished. His method of trying to "talk" to the team could very easily scar someone for life. I think he should not be able to the a high school athletic coach any longer. No, a coach has not given me a speech that I will always remember. My team members that have given a speech that I will always remember. Which was very recently. They said "that all we have is each other out here on this court, we're a family. That's all we have."

I think what the coach did to these players was very wrong. Just because you lost a game don’t mean it’s already too late. They can come back and have a great season. I disagree because they shouldn’t be forced to lie on graves just because they lost a game. I think the coach’s speech would have freaked me out. I think the coach should be punished and his punishment should be he gets fired. The coach always told me “Never say never, and never back down from your dreams, keep true to your self and you will accomplish what ever you want in life.”

If I was that coach I would may have did the same thing. I do not thank that he was woung in what he did I thank that some time if you see them not giving it there all out there and you know that they can do a lot better they should get some kind of talk. My dad when he was the coach he had so many talks that almost all the time he started off with “I do not care about what you have going on at home, I do not care about your boyfriends or girlfriend’s but when you get out hear you are with your team family we are what you care about don’t even look and the people in the sets out there because you are not hear for them but we are hear to win”. So I thank that some times that’s all it takes. So no he should not get punished for that.

I think that his decision was a very stupid and crazy idea to make his players lay down on graves. No I do not agree with his method, because it is very disrespectful to the families of the people's graves that he made them lay down on. It would have inspired me, but also freaked me out, because he shouldn't have made his team lay on graves to inspire them, if he was a good coach then he didn't have to do all of that in the first place. I think he should be punished for what he did, because he was very disrespectful to the families of the people inside those graves and to the kid's parents who he made lay down on top of them. I am an athlete and I have a coach that gives some great speechs, but I don't have a favorite speech of his cause all of them are very inspiring to me.
