Advice from Bill Gates

Bill Gates gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair . . . get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a sports car until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping . . . they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you think you are.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Have you heard or read this before? What was your initial reaction to Bill Gates' advice? What rule do you feel teenagers need to hear most today? Why? What rule do you feel is unnecessary because it is well-known among teenagers today? Do you think WHS is guilty of "babying" you and your peers?

Yes, I have heard many of these things before from my history teacher and football coach, Mr. Gottfried. I fully agree with all of Mr. Gates “tips”. Life is not full of roses and great things. No, I do not think WHS is guilty of “babying” us. Yes the teachers are easier than your boss but I believe they are supposed to be. High School is a time of learning and preparing so you will be able to enter the work force.

All of his advice is realistic and probably things he had to learn on his own. However, most of the rules are pretty much the same. Someone could sum it up in three rules. Life isn’t fair, take responsibility for your own actions, and work hard for what you want. He also makes it seem like everyone in high school is self-centered. A lot of them are but not everyone and he made it seem like we are all selfish.

I have heard these rules many times before. It is true many students are not aware of these rules the real world is going to hit them like a shovel because they just don’t know. WHS does baby its students to a certain extent. Not as badly as so other schools. For example, in Bill Gate’s rules he mentioned schools that don’t except failing grades. WHS is not a horrible school when it comes to learning about the inside world. Teachers try to prepare us as best they can.

I’ve read this before and it still makes me laugh. Teens need to learn that if you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them. So many people say this happened and why did my parents or friends let this happen. GROW UP!!!!! I’m pretty sure most people know that life is not divided into semesters and that we don’t get summers off. I don’t think WHS is guilty of babying us. Just look at Mr. Gottfried for example.

I have not heard the advice before. My initial reaction is that he is right. Life is not easy and it does not get easier later on. The rule teenagers need to hear most is that life is not divided into semesters. Teenagers are always expecting a break and in the real world you will not get one. WHS does not baby you. If you do something wrong you get punished and the teachers make you work for your grades.

I have heard this advice before, but from my parents not Bill Gates. There are a few rules that teenagers really need to pay attention to. Like Rule 1: Life is not fair…get used to it. So many teenagers think that life is fair and that they will get whatever they want. The same goes for Rule 2, you are going to have to do something before you get some sort of reward back. The world is not going to be nice to you just because you’re there; you have to earn respect for what you do. Rule 6 is also very true, teenagers have to learn because they are going to have to answer for them selves, there will not be anyone to hide behind. I’m not trying to sound as if I follow these rules all the time myself but I try to about 98% of the time.

I have not heard of these rules before but they are pretty funny. Most of these are very true and I like them. I think teenagers need to hear rule five the most. We really don’t understand that things have changed as much as they have. Working at a place like Burger King, it is a job and they are paying you to work there. That’s a privilege. I believe that all teenagers know that life isn’t fair. We see it everyday when a homeless person is walking down the street. I do not think that WHS babies its students. They befriend us to understand and know how we operate. This will help them help us to make the right decisions for ourselves.

I have never heard Bill Gates' advice before. Bill Gates makes a good point in his speech to high school teenagers. Teenagers today need to learn from rule number ten. This is because teenagers think life is like a Jersey Shore episode and life is that easy. Rule number one is unnecessary to teenager because most of us already have jobs, drive a car, and also know how hard life is. Sometimes I think that WHS babies their students, but in other ways they don't. They baby us by giving the answers to easily other than figuring it out ourselves.

I have not heard or read this before. I am going to use Bill Gates' advice and remember as many rules as possible. I feel teenagers need to hear Rule 9 because that is describing what the real world is about. I think Rule 10 is unnecessary because I hear it from my parents all the time. I do not think WHS is guilty of "babying" me and my peers because we students are more reliable on ourselves and try to understand things on their own.

No, I haven't heard or have read about this before. We as a group of teenagers really need to hear about rule 7 almost everyday, because we think our parents are bitter and old, what we don't realize is the stress they go through. They also deal with us talk about how cool we think we are on a daily basis. Rule #1 is very well known, because we always talk about how life isn't fair. Sometimes they "baby" us, but I really can't explain how they do.

I don’t think I’ve ever read this advice from Bill Gates. My initial thought was, “hey this stuff is true”. The one I think teenagers need the most is “life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off” because I look forward to my summer vacations and I know when I get out of school that I probably won’t have a job where I get two and a half months off. The flipping burger one can go because almost every student that has a job works in a fast food restaurant. I don’t think WHS baby us because we don’t have a 10 point grading system like everyone else. So it’s harder for us to make the same grade as other students who do have the 10 point grading system.

I have not heard this before. My initial reaction to Bill's Gates advice was that it was very good and true. Of all the things we must learn in high school these are things that they don't teach us but I don't really think they can. I believe that is something we must learn on our own. Teenagers need to hear rule one the most today. When someone doesn't get their way or something doesn't go as planned they get mad and there is no need because after high school things only get worse. I think rule 11 is unnecessary because most teenagers know to be nice to nerds so they can help them with their work. I don't think WHS is guilty of "babying" me and my peers. If you do something you weren't supposed to or you don't keep your grades up you get punished for it.

I haven't heard this from him although I know my parents and grandparents have said similar things. I think teens need to hear most of the rules but mainly rules 7, rule 10, and rule 6. Teenagers need to learn that you can't always get what you want, your parents aren't responsible, and your parents really do a lot to help you even if you don't think so. I am not really sure what rule is most commonly know because for everyone there are people that do it anyway and blame it on their parents or say they will get $60,00 a year right out of high school. I don't think WHS is babysitting, I think they are trying to teach us reality.

I've read this before. I think all of these are very true. I can't really pick one; all of these are good things for teenagers to hear. Maybe number 8 because people always say that school is nothing compared to the real world. WHS isn't really guilty of any of these.

I have read this list of rules before. I think the rule that teenagers need to follow rule that says be nice to nerds because you never know were life well take you or what you'll end up doing. I think teenagers know burger flipping rule well. Almost every teenager today works or has worked in the fast food industry. I don't think WHS is guilty of "babying" me or my peers.

I have read this before. Mr. Ellis showed us this last year. I think hes right. Life is not easy and wont be easy. I think teens need to grow up and get with reality. I think in some ways WHS is babying some students. That's not really good but can also be good in a way.

Olivia said...

I read these rules last year in Mr. Ellis's English class. I agree with Bill Gates's advice. Teenagers need to hear rule number 1 "Life is not fair... get used to it!" Some teens think that everything should be fair, but that's not the way the world works. I don't think there are any rules that are unnecessary.

Unknown said...

I haven't heard this before. It was kinda cool because he's telling it like it is, not sugar-coating it. The rule about being nice to nerds is one teens need to hear because it's so true. The unnecessary rule was 4 about bosses being tougher than teachers since it should be obvious but few people think about it. WHS definately babies their students.

Unknown said...

these rules are true life isnt a fairy tale and some know more than others about life is wild cuz u only get one chance to do it rite......so whats rite

zacc said...

I have heard of it but never heard about the rules. That it is true. Number 10. Because that’s what most people do it and life is not like it is in putrid on television. No because you learn from your mistakes.

I have read and heard this before. My Initial reaction was it is true. I know all my life so far i have been more exposed to the real world then most people are. My parents were shiraght with me and told me how it was and what did and did not exist. Rule number eleven is right half the people of the U.S are nerds and they make about 30 times more money then people make in a year that’s why there your boss. No I do not think WHS is well known for babying people.

Unknown said...

Some of Bill Gates' advice made me annoyed, but some of it was pretty decent. I think the teenagers need to know life is not fair . . . get used to it and remember that everyday. WHS is kind of guilty for "babying" a few of us. Other adults outside of school don't believe us that a few teachers are very hard on us. But over all adults and teenagers have different ways of thinking and we all have our own opinions on certain things.

No I have not heard this before. My Initial reaction re-action is that he doesn’t need to talk. Bill Gates needs to go to Windsor High School before he talks anymore. I think most teenagers don’t know how lucky they are. I know people whose parents pay for their car, car insurance and all they have to pay for is gas and they still complain about that.

Unknown said...

I can't really say either he is right or not. If you really think about it he is somewhat right on somethings. Everyone should know that life only gives what you offer. It shouldn't depend on what job you get , so your boss shouldn't be mean to you. For everyone some people should just stop and think about all of this.

I liked a lot of these rules that he set up. He's right about all of them. You can't always wine and get everything that you want in life. If you think you can do that when you get into the real world, you're wrong! The rule that teenagers need to hear is that life isn't fair and to get over it. It's so true; people need to stop complaining and just face the facts. I do think WHS is getting worst and worst because of how the school system is runned.

I believe in what Bill Gates is saying. Life isn’t fair and you don’t get second chances in life. I don’t believe in schools not letting kids fail. If the kids do not put in the effort and don’t try then they deserve to fail. I also believe in being nice to nerds, because one day they will rule the world.

I have never heard or read these questions before. My initial reaction to this was quite interesting. I feel teenagers take life for granted and they need to hear that people only do things because they want to. Being nice to nerds is unnecessary because teenagers will still do what they want to do regardless. I don’t think Windsor High School is guilty in babying students I just think they need to be a little harder on students.

Unknown said...

I have heard this before. I think it is kind of harsh. Bill Gates just seems like a person who only cares about himself because he has his money. Today all a teenager really needs to hear is that they will be something in the future, even if they think they can’t. I do think WHS is guilty of babying us. No one is ever going to make it far in life if they are constantly having people do things for them.

Hannah said...

No I have never seen this list before I’ve heard of a few things off this list. I think everything on this list is true. I think the 11th rule is so true. You will always work for the people you think are the nerds in high school. I think the rule sating life is unfair get over it. If you don’t get your work done and they don’t care let them fail don’t baby them let them do what they want. I do think Windsor baby’s some kids they give their students good grades to just get them through, and that is not fair to the other students who try really hard and work for their grades and people who don’t care get better grades than them.

Yes, I have read this advice before. I think some of Bill Gates advice was good. I wasn’t offended by the advice because that’s his opinion on life I guess. I don’t think WHS baby us because it’s kind like motivation to some students. I think I might actually use some of his advice.

f.fawcett said...

No I have not, that they are good advice. I think number 6 should be heard by all the kids of this generation! Kids now a days do not understand that when you mess up it's on you. They think it falls to their parents. Which is totally NOT true. There are actually three rules that are well know by kids now a days. Rule 8,10 and 11. Yes I think our school babies us. I mean yeah I try hard and I do what I know. I know I can do better though,I have the drive and enthusiasm. I just need to be pushed to do the very best I can give.

I have heard of several rules of this passage. These rules are all true because, some people don't know how to walk on their own and be independent. I truly think that anyone like that should get their act together before they go into the real world, because it's gonna bite them in the butt if they don't. I don't think that WHS bay's us and our on certain achievements, because they help feel better about ourselves and it helps us do better. I don't think any rules of this are untrue.
