A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry."

I like Mary Anns thought of what love is. I think love is something unexplainable. I do think we use the word love lightly but there are so many different kinds of love its hard to not use it.
The boy that like was mary because he said that he love his mommy so much he would go up and down and the stars look down at him. My favorite definition of love was "Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other." Love can never truely be explained. But, love is what you feel when your heart is speaking instead of your mouth. Love is like a rare crystal that can't be bought or sold. Love is happiness without measure. Love is a powerful force that can bring you down or give you the courage to do something you would never do. I think we use the word "Love" lightly. We say it, but we will never know the true meaning of "Love".

I liked the one by Nikka. "If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate." It's true because if you really hate them, then try to become their friend. Then you start to care and love them. My definition of love is when you get this feeling that never goes away when you’re around that special someone and when you’re not around them, you always think about them and love them more and more. I don't think we use the word "love" too lightly because most people say it and do not mean it. If we took it too lightly then people wouldn't be saying it and not meaning it.

I think Rebecca's answer was the best, being that I would do anything for that person I love even it if hurts me to make them happy. My definition of love would be that unadulterated pure feeling for that other person that you would go to the ends of the universe for, that person that you would be willing to go through so much even to receive so little. Being that one who understands him or her unlike anyone else, being able to talk about problems and being able to get past them grow stronger and never giving up, never losing hope or trust it the worst of times, and never forgetting all the great memories in the best of times. I think the would "love" is use way to lightly being that no one is ever sure if it will last for ever or of the other person feels the same way. The fun part is finding that person to love and be loved by.

Billy’s definition of love was the best, because when I read it I smiled and thought about it and it’s true. Some people use the word “love” to lightly. Some people use it and don’t really mean it, and some people say it just to make some feel happy when they say it. My definition of love is my mother and God. When someone would give their life just so you can live yours; also when someone would go without food and clothes just so you can have the best that’s love to me.

My favorite definition of love is by Noelle which says, "Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, and he wears it everyday". This one is my favorite because it truly is what happens when you’re in love. It when you care so much about that one person that you'll do anything to make them smile. It says you'll sacrifice what other people think and say about you for that one person. I think that love is when you find that person that knows all your flaws and past mistakes and still loves you with everything they have. I do think that love is one of those words that are thrown around a lot. I think that the meaning of love has been portrayed differently, and therefore people use it too lightly.

My definition of love is when your talking to someone and get those butterflys in your stomach and you can not help but smile thats love. I do believe we do use the word love very lightly that we say it to losely. When people say I love you they just say it to hear it with out feelings which confuses people alot. As adults we don't appreciate the word love as i look at what the little kids had to say it brings tears to my eyes that the smallest thing can mean love to them. This opens my eyes and tells me I am going to stop using the words losely and say it only when I mean it.

My favorite definition was the one about saying their name different. It is a little weird sounding but I like the way that its kind of true. You always hear your name different from someone that loves you. I think many kids these days DO use the word "love" too lightly. Many kids our age say love in every relationship when they don't even know what love truly is.

I like little 8 year old Jessica's. You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you really mean it, because if you say it and don't mean it, it's just going to come haunt you later because you hurt them. You should also say it to them a lot just like she said, some people forget. My definition of love is 'love is an addiction that no pill can cure'. I think we use "love" a lot, but that doesn't mean we use it lightly. We love our friends, we love our family, and most importantly we love the one we want to spend the rest of our life with.

I think people do use the word "love" to lightly because you hear young people say it just to seem sweet or sincere to get what they want.

That is the cutest thing I have ever read! I liked Karl the best it was so cute, it is amazing how little kid think. I do not think that is a definition for love. Love is a feeling and somehow you just feel when it happens to you. I honestly think that people use the word "love" excessively lightly. I agree with little Jessica when say "don't say it unless you honestly mean it!

I liked the kid who said that his grandfather painted his grandmother's toes when she had arthritis. Even once he got arthritis, he still painted her toenails. I thought that that was love the most because I am sure that the grandfather did not want to paint his wife's toenails. My definition of love is, "Love is when you want to be with someone even when times are hard...". This comes from my favorite show Scrubs. I think that the term love is used to loosely in today's world. My definition of love is just caring for someone and being there for them no matter what and loving someone even when they don't even love you back. My favorite out of all of theses would have to be either the helping him cry one or saying I love you a lot because people forget. I think that's really cute, and it's even cuter than someone that young thinks hat way. I think there are some people who say I love you either too soon or say it because they think they should. I don't think everyone means it when they say I love you, but when someone means it, you know it. To me when you love someone, you love to be with them, but when you're not it's not the same and you miss that moment. When you see that person you just feel complete and like everything is perfect that way.

The child’s definition that I thought was the sweetest was the one by Noelle. I thought it was really cute because that’s what little kids do when they are “in love”. My definition of love is when you will do anything for somebody. I do not think that I use the word love too lightly. I don’t just go around telling everybody I love them. I have two definitions of love I love my friends in one way, but I love my family and close friends (boyfriend) in a different way. The love that I have for my family and boyfriend are stronger than the love that I have for my friends.

I like the next to the last one when Jessica,the eight year old,says that you should not say "I love you" unless you mean it. It is really true because people always say that they love you and sometimes they do not even mean it. My definition of love is when you can not stop thinking about someone and when your away from them you just can not wait to see them again. I do think that we use the word "love" to lightly. I do not think that you should say it just because you want something, you should say it because that is whats in your heart.

I couldn't tell you the definition of love nor would I try to explain it's meaning. I, just like many others do not know what love is suppose too be exactly, so for that reason I have never really told anyone I loved them, but simply agreed with them when they said the phrase towards me. My definition of love is when no matter what someone does to you or anyone else you'll still care about them. The best definition of love was from Danny, he said,"love is when mommy makes coffee for daddy and tastes it before she gives it to him". I picked this quote because I can relate to it on a personal level. I always make coffee for David every morning and he always laughs at me cause I never make myself a cup of coffee I just take a couple of sips from his.

Some are corny, cute, or both! :) My favorite one is "If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate," by Nikka and the last one because they are both true and cute. Also, the last quote almost made me cry. My definition of love is the attachment of a strong emotion to a person or thing. As far as a people, there is a difference between being in love and loving someone. Well, I think "love" is used lightly sometimes and too much.
